Develop a Positive Attitude

There are three basic, effective and easy to learn self-defense techniques that we teach at our ATA Martial Arts in Wilmington, NC. These tools will help give you the confidence to help protect and defend yourself. Anyone can learn these techniques and because it takes some finesse, practice and accuracy, it is best to learn them from a professional martial artist.

Elbow Strike. Using either the front or back of the elbow to an attackers nose, face or solar plexis is an excellent tool to learn. Using your upper body muscles, your elbow can become a powerful weapon against and assault. It is especially effective for women who more than likely, unfortunately, be faced with a much larger opponent. This technique, when properly taught and applied, can help level the *playing field*.

Palm Heel Strike. The flat of your palm can be used to strike the nose or the side of the face or neck. We all have certain points in our body that can cause extreme pain with not too much applied pressure. Our staff at ATA Martial Arts can teach you the location of this pressure points and how to apply these techniques to these areas.

Knee Strike. The knee strike is an effective tool when aimed at the groin, side of the leg (pressure point), stomach and nose. This strike has the added benefit of our strong lower body muscles.

Senior Master Paul Leitzke and his personally trained staff instruct at his ATA Martial Arts in Wilmington, NC. He has over 30 years of both martial arts and teaching experience. Martial Arts and ADHD

With proper instruction and a program that is grounded in Eastern traditions, martial arts offer many benefits in the development of a child's physical, mental and spiritual well being. While originally designed as a self-defense mechanism and form of physical combat, the most helpful martial art forms taught today promote nonviolence, physical and mental skills, and a holistic or spiritual approach to exercise. This is certainly different from what is often depicted in the movies or on television.  One of the most appropriate forms of martial arts for children is Taekwondo as taught by the American Taekwondo Association (ATA). Taekwondo combines the linear movements of Karate from Japan with the flowing circular patterns of Kung Fu from China. There are many reasons for kids to become involved in the martial arts. According to the ATA, the building blocks of its system include goal-setting, self-control, courtesy, integrity, confidence, self-esteem, self-awareness, perseverance, respect and dedication.
